The Pyrenees Orientales was the birthplace of many great examples of Western Romanesque Art. Benedictine abbeys, priories and churches tell us much about the origins of the first Romanesque art form. From the 11th century this ‘art nouveau’ grew and the new shapes, techniques and ambitions became well established until the introduction of the Gothic style in the 13th century.
